The Jewish community in London owes a debt of gratitude and recognition to the late Mr. Eric Fibbens.
His career in planning spanned more than 30 years. In 1978 he formed Fibbens Fox Associates with Heather Fox, who later that year became his wife.
Eric Fibbens and his associate, Graham Murdoch, worked with the North West London Eruv Committee from the outset, dealing with the professional aspects of planning applications and public works with the local authority and government.
Eric served as an expert planning witness at the Public Inquiry that resulted in planning consent being granted. He gave evidence and stood for cross-examination without disclosing that he was suffering a critical illness and was in considerable pain. He left the stand and was taken directly to hospital.
The following night, Eric dreamt a parable describing life before and after the eruv, which he dictated to Heather the following morning. Eric died that weekend. As a mark of respect and in an effort to express the affection in which he was held by all of us fortunate enough to know him, his parable was read in court to the Inspector. It was a moving and memorable moment. A member of the Eruv Committee was privileged to be invited to give a eulogy at Eric’s funeral.
The practice is continued by Heather and the professional work is directed by Graham Murdoch, who has provided invaluable help since Eric’s death to obtain further planning permissions and to bring the Eruv to realisation.
